Prescribed Fire

Restoring a Fire-Dependent Ecosystem

Prescribed fire, also known as controlled burning, is one of the most important tools used to maintain the health of Hitchcock Woods’ longleaf pine ecosystem. Carefully planned and conducted by trained fire professionals, these burns mimic the natural fire cycles that have shaped this landscape for thousands of years, supporting healthy forests, diverse wildlife, and resilient habitats.

The Benefits of Prescribed Fire

Prescribed fire plays a critical role in maintaining the ecological balance of Hitchcock Woods. Each carefully managed burn helps restore natural processes while protecting both the forest and surrounding communities.

Reduce Forest Fuel

Removes accumulated vegetation and lowers wildfire risk.

Control Hardwood Growth

Prevents hardwood species from overtaking the longleaf pine ecosystem.

Enhance Wildlife Habitat

Creates healthier habitats for native plants and wildlife.

Protect Neighboring Communities

Reduces the potential intensity of future wildfires.

A Long-Term Commitment to Forest Health

For more than 30 years, Hitchcock Woods Foundation has managed an active prescribed fire program to restore and protect this rare ecosystem. Depending on weather conditions, trained crews safely burn approximately 200 to 500 acres of the Woods each year as part of an ongoing forest management strategy.

Fire Helps Wildlife Thrive

The return of regular prescribed fire has transformed the health of Hitchcock Woods, creating ideal conditions for native plants and wildlife to flourish. One of the most significant conservation achievements has been supporting the successful reintroduction of the federally endangered Red-cockaded Woodpecker, a species that depends on healthy longleaf pine forests for survival.
